When you have a sushi restaurant located over Walker Bay with views from each and every table, you need to create a menu and wine list that caters for varied tastes. Lemon Butta has managed to get this down to a T! The comprehensive menu offers sushi, grills, pasta dishes, a host of salads and seafood - all to be enjoyed while watching the Southern Right whales luxuriating in the bay below.

When compiling a wine list, various factors have to be considered: The type of cuisine, clientele, location and staff. Because Lemon Butta is located in Hermanus - a seaside village which is very seasonal, we need to put together a list that caters to all pockets. Not only do you need to balance your list wisely, you also need to have trained staff on hand who know about the little things that count. There’s nothing worse than having your champagne cork almost take you out because the waiter’s been watching too many Formula 1 races!

The choice of wines is very dependant on the menu and Sauvignon Blanc most certainly remains the flavour of the day, with bubblies a close second. Each cultivar is represented with a choice of at least two options. The list needs to be balanced in terms of cultivar choices, price points and area, and easy to read with informative wine descriptions. It’s always a treat to be able to select wines from areas other than the local wards, and of course, different terroirs (big buzz word in the industry)!

With such a comprehensive list with so many various wine choices in so many different price ranges, it’s not necessary to bring your own wine to this fine establishment, as whatever you fancy is readily available and, of course, perfectly chilled!
